Questions To Ask An Architect During A Consultation

Your first consultation with an architect is the best place to ask any questions you may have. It’s easy to forget everything you may want to ask. In this post we pulled together some of the most important questions to ask any architect you are thinking of hiring.

Questions

During your consultation feel free to ask the architect as many questions as you need to fully understand the process and your responsibilities. This will not only help you get a better understanding of the process but may also help the architect better understand what you are looking to do.

The most important questions to ask are as follows:

-How do you charge for your services?

The three most common ways an architect charges for their services are, hourly, fixed fee, or a percentage of construction costs. Be sure to talk about costs and your budget with your architect. These fee structures may vary within a single firm depending on the services rendered in the contract.

-How much experience do you have?

It’s always nice to know someone you’re thinking of hiring has a lot of experience. Find as much information you can about the architect and his firm via the web. This can answer a lot of basic questions and help you think of important questions that may not be answered via his website.

-Who will be working on my project?

Architects generally have a team of people who assist them. The first person you talk to may not be the one who works entirely on your project. It is good to ask who might assist the architect and get their contact information.

-Do you have a signature style?

Some architects have a signature style and only work with that style in their projects. This is good to be aware of to make sure the style you want fits with theirs. At Cummins Architecture and Design, we focus on the client’s style and design preferences to ensure your satisfaction.

-What are my responsibilities as a client?

As the client there are certain tasks you are in charge of. Some of these could be, obtaining a building permit, hiring a contractor, applying for planning permission. Talk to your architect about property owner responsibilities to make sure you assist in keeping your project moving forward.

-How long will it take for the project to be completed?

While the architect might not be able to give you an exact timeline, they should be able to give you a general idea of how long your project will take to be completed based on the scope of work. It’s important to get an idea so you can plan your schedule accordingly.
