Sprucing Up Your Garage Inside & Out

Often times the garage is an overlooked part of the house. It’s used as a place to store boxes and things or to park the car. Updating your garage can add resale value to your home if you ever decide to sell your home.

Before you start changing things around your garage declutter the inside. This will make it much easier to work in and around the space and will help you get rid of things you don’t need which will free up some space. Also, power hose the exterior of the garage to get rid of any built-up dirt. You may find that all you need to do for the exterior is just give it a good washing.

Paint is a quick and inexpensive way to brighten up the interior or exterior of your garage. When painting the exterior of your garage, just remember to look for exterior paint. Otherwise the paint color could fade, get mildew, and stained from rain or snow. Choose a color that matches the style or is similar to your houses paint color. On the interior, paint can be any color you’d like! I personally like neutral colors but any color is fine. Since the garage is closed off from the main part of the house, colors don’t necessarily need to be the same as the interior of the house.

On the inside of your garage, install or put up shelving racks. Put them alongside the longer walls to optimize space. For the smaller wall, that is usually against the house, put a workbench with lots of drawers for extra storage for smaller things. Hooks can be attached to the wall to hold things like racks, shovels, and more. Overhead storage is a great way to keep things out of the way but still easily accessible.

New exterior lights above your garage can be a quick update. There are many different styles of exterior lights to choose from so finding one that matches your homes style should be no problem. If you have hinges or handles on your garage door, find lights that match the hardware color. Adding hinges and handles is another great way to spruce up your garage door.

Plants on the sides or in between garage doors is a beautiful way to update the way your garage looks. Decorative pots add a little spark and are eye catching.  Pergolas over the garage with plants growing on them has a charming and lovely look.
